The Wi-Fi Halow, a long range, low power Wi-Fi was launched by the company Wi-Fi Alliance on 4th January 2016.It is created to leverage the Internet-of-things(IoT).This technology will be used for connecting smart homes, smart cities, driver less cars, industries, retail, health care and agriculture. Wi-Fi Halow will not only be able to transmit signals to far off places but also in an arduous environment. It will be used by products that embody IEEE 802.11ah wireless networking protocol.

Wi-Fi Halow will give a stimulus to Internet-of-things by enabling communications between battery operated wearables and also to those appliances that cannot be connected to the present day Wi-Fi technology. A  Wi-Fi Halow device is expected to cover a distance upto one kilometer.  The usage of unlicensed or open spectrum radio frequency further adds on to the benefit it provides to the IoT.

Bluetooth and cellular networks directly competes with Wi-Fi Halow. As an extension of IEEE 802.11ah it is still in the drafting stage and will receive due approval only later this year.
