Metadata back end - a Prerequisite for SSBI

Self-service business intelligence (SSBI) is a way that allows people to analyze data and create customized reports to help in the process of decision-making without knowing the technical protocols. SSBI is all about the liberty and flexibility to use new technology to quarry data and use it for predictive analysis.
Data governance is essential for SSBI without which organizations run the risk of chaotic reporting and bad analysis leading to a rise in the maintenance cost. To address this issue, a back-end server with either a physical or virtual location in the clouds is a must. This system of storing data is called metadata repository.
Metadata repository allows all the organizations data to be integrated in one place. It also bolsters SSBI by providing both the technical and business description of the data set. A well structured and maintained repository is a tool in the hands of the management to take essential business decisions. However, organizations will have to lay down processes and rules for their SSBI platforms, to enable data analysis in a controlled and secure environment.
