Disney, a prominent retail character licensor with $ 45 billion in retail sales is all set to enter the Indian market and is negotiating with India’s DLF Brands to open stores in India. The stores will be franchisees of the parent company.Disney plans to reproduce some of the designs developed by Steve Jobs of Apple Inc. According to Timmy Sarna, of DLF Brands, it envisages to open about 50 Disney stores in India in the near future.
Industry experts believe that the market for children’s clothing which is at 95,000 crores is expected to grow at an annual compounded growth rate of 20%.The market is mostly dominated by unbranded products. According to J.Suresh of Arvind Lifestyle,the apparel market for kids is expected to gain the much-needed momentum. This boom will come nor only from the big cities but also from small towns as well.
Disney through online retail giants such as Amazon and Flipkart sells about 3000 SKUs of its prominent characters like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck in India alone.
