Ericson AB along with Qualcomm Inc and five other cellular giants to license patents jointly in the field of Internet of Things. A company was created to serve this purpose. The newly created organization, Avanci, will be a one-stop source to license patents covering wireless technology. All the participants envisage on sharing the revenues earned from the licensing deals.
The initial partners of the organizations include China’s ZTE Corp, the Dutch telecom company Royal KPN NV and InterDigital Inc., a wireless technology company based out of Delaware apart from Qualcomm and Ericson. Avanci will be an independent company with its own set of employees. The company will charge a flat fee for the licenses that it proposes to sell but the pricing is yet to be revealed.
Avanci’s founder and chief executive, Kasim Alfalahi, (a former Ericsson executive)mentioned that the company is also looking forward to collaboration with companies with patents that are essential for cellular.
