The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority plans to save $65 million every year by outsourcing the maintenance of its fleet of bus. The company was recommended to take such a step by T –hired consultants who also believes that outsourcing MBTA’s customer service operation will also prove beneficial for the company.
However, these recommendations will have an adverse effect on workers as they might lose their jobs. The process of privatization is aimed at the agency’s core operations. Last year, the T entered into an outsourcing deal with Carmen’s Union Local 589 and saved the company lot of money.
Decisions regarding the outsourcing of its core jobs are still pending, but officials hinted that the process may soon start. McKinsey & Co. and TransPro Consulting, Florida-based firms were appointed last year to find out the opportunities for outsourcing. The report prepared by them suggested maintenance of the bus as sector where they could cut cost.
