According to the ICT expenditure benchmarks by the Department of Finance, federal agencies are more likely to spend less on internal IT staff and work more with technology outsourcers as tech spending has hit a record levels.
Since 2011 when the finance department started the spending analysis, the overall technology spending peaked at $6.2 billion for the year 2015-16. This is the reason why the percentage of internal IT jobs is being done by more outsourced workers.
According to the report, a full time internal public service IT worker costs an average of $132,000 a year while an IT contractor averages at $214,000 a year. The report also states that outsourced services has increased to 28 percent of all IT spending from 20 percent since 2011-12.
