Facebook Inc., the online social media and social networking services giant recently announced the launch of a television application. Users with the help of set-top boxes like the Amazon.com Inc.’s Fire TV, Samsung Electronics Co.’s internet-connected TVs and Apple Inc.’s Apple TV can now stream videos in their news feed directly, the company said on Tuesday. According to The Wall Street Journal, this latest launch of the television application is the step of Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg’s plan to transform Facebook into a “video-first” company and further contest for TV advertisement dollars.
Dan Rose, Facebook’s vice president of partnerships on Tuesday said, “We want people to be able to consume content wherever they are — whether it’s on their phone, whether it’s on their computer — and TV is just another screen for that”.
With the help of this new video app, users can now easily watch videos shared by their friends or any other people they follow. The application will also showcase the videos that are saved by the user, watched, shared or uploaded along with top live broadcasts from around the world. The social media giant also plans to recommend videos to users that are based on their interests.
