EmblemHealth IT employees along with their supporters held a protest march last week in midtown Manhattan. They were protesting against the organization’s decision to outsource work to Cognizant, an IT service firm. Around twenty-five employees assembled outside St.Michael’s Church on 34th Street near 9th Avenue opposite EmblemHealth’s office carrying signs saying “Keep jobs in the U.S.A” and “Protect U.S jobs”.
The protest which had been organized by Labor attorney, Sara Blackwell, was the first public outcry by the IT employees. It is a general phenomenon that employees who lose their jobs to outsourcing never come out in the open but the employees of EmblemHealth felt that they have been deceived and misled by the management.
According to EmblemHealth CEO Karen Ignagni, the organization lacks the money required for modernization and up gradation of the existing IT platform and hence this decision to outsource work to Cognizant. However, the employees do not agree with this and feel that they have been lied to by the company.
